Having a great vocalist in the lineup seems to be a must for any group looking for victory in the Battle of the Bands series presented each year at the Patio. While the fifth edition of the competition launched last Wednesday, grand-prize winners from 2004, 2003 and 2002 shared a bill Friday night at the Broad Ripple nightclub. In addition to being a chance to catch up with Seven Degrees from Center, Devil to Pay and Loretta, the event was a fund-raiser for music programs at Indianapolis Public Schools.

... the members of Devil to Pay sets their sights somewhere south of heaven. Although band leader Steve Janiak doesn't flaunt his voice, he possesses plenty of range and grit to sell Devil to Pay's anthems of riff-intensive rock.

Janiak supplied menacing narration to "Chugga Chugga," the latest in a series of his monolithic epics. At the same time, Devil to Pay's work often is suggestive of Wes Craven's series of "Scream" films: There's always a wink and a smile to accompany the danger.
