Get Ready to ROCK! review of "Fate is Your Muse"; Album Review – DEVIL TO PAY – Fate Is Your Muse Posted on April 2, 2013 by david.wilson Ripple Records (Release date – 09.04.13) ‘Fate Is Your Muse’ is the fourth album by Indianapolis rockers, Devil To Pay. The band formed ten years ago and have honed their sound over this period transforming into a heavy, eight legged monster of an outfit. The guys have taken elements of Sabbath, Monster Magnet and Clutch and made them their own. All songs are based on huge riffs, but these are no ordinary riffs, each has a twist which keeps things fresh and interesting throughout and leaves you wanting more. Opener ‘Prepare To Die’ is a prime example of this with a solid riff topped off with a guitar flourish provided by Steve Janiak and Rob Hough. Steve is the main songwriter in the band and the inspiration behind this album came from a ‘mind-expanding epiphany’ which set him off on a quest to understand the link between the normal and paranormal, very deep! Whether the guys are grinding out the riffs on slower numbers like ‘Wearin’ You Down’ or rocking out on ‘This Train Won’t Stop’ all tracks are highly impressive. Another key element to all tracks is a hooky chorus and great sense of melody which, when coupled with great playing, all add up to an essential listen. One of the standout tracks for me is ‘Tie One On’ which has a groove as big as the Grand Canyon and a mid section Maiden would be proud of. The album closes in fine style with another slow burner, ‘Beyond The Ether’, which contains some tasty guitar work throughout. With this album the fate of Devil To Pay should be assured. This is an impressive release by a band who have paid their dues and are looking to collect the plaudits they so richly deserve.
