DEVIL TO PAY
“FATE IS YOUR MUSE”

Posted Mar 29, 2013

Devil to Pay’s brand of heavy music recalls grunge forefathers like Alice and Chains and Soundgarden, among other ‘90s heavy alternative classics; it is polished, anthemic, and built upon classic metal influences infused with sludgy elements.

Impenetrable guitar spires stand tall on Fate Is Your Muse, the Indianapolis quartet’s fourth long-player. The 12-song set does harnesses plenty of aggression (“Ten Lizardmen & One Pocket Knife”) and tempers it with rough-around-the-edges emotion (“Beyond the Ether); from fist pumps to lighter flames, this album delivers a rocking variety.

There are points during Fate Is Your Muse when the band’s wellspring feels like a desert-sun mirage (“Tie One On”), but it doesn’t detract from Devil to Pay’s poignant perspective on heavy rock and roll.

Fate Is Your Muse is out April 4 on Ripple Music.
