Wicked Channel review of "Fate is Your Muse" Devil to Pay: Fate is Your Muse (2013) Review March 10, 2013 Mike I am in a weird kind of mood right now. I am sitting in the hospital, where I have been for four days, hoping to get released tomorrow. I am sharing a room with with a guy who just had about 20 visitors all come at once. I had to put on my headphones, but I really did not want to listen to the basketball game that I am watching. This is the first time that I have listened to any music in the last few days. I was not really sure what to put on, so I went into my iTunes and selected my “New” playlist. This is my list of CDs that that the labels send me for review. I picked “Fate is Your Muse” by Indianapolis hard rock band Devil to Pay. This was my first exposure to Devil to Pay, so I was not sure what to expect, but it struck a nerve with me, which is uncommon these days. I get a ton of CDs sent to me for review, but it is well known that I only review the ones that I enjoy to any certain extent. I really do not see the need to review an album that I do not like. I would rather not say anything than to trash a band that I know nothing about. Of course, for more well known bands, I tend to write a review whether it is good or bad. People read these reviews to figure out if an album is worth purchasing. People may be on the fence about a well known band’s recent release, so they will check out the review. With the lesser known bands, most people have not heard of them, so if I can get some people to buy their albums, them it is a job well done by me. Of course, I would never blow smoke up your ass either. I just want to point out the bands that I think have something special. With all of that nonsense out of the way, we have Devil to Pay bringing you “Fate is Your Muse” on April 9, 2013 through Ripple Music. The album will be available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats. With this release, we are treated to a band that plays some serious hard rock, but a little more on the metal side of things. Their influences seem to be all over the map and they have a way of making each song unique and intense. If you want a straight rocker, check out This Train Won’t Stop. It is fast and almost has a Guns N Roses feel to it. Another straight rocker would be Savonarola. Then we have Yes Master, which bleed Alice in Chains after having an opening that speaks to Black Sabbath fans. Keep in mind that these songs are still their own. You just hear the influences. I want to make that distinction. The standout on the album is the oddly titled Ten Lizardmen & One Pocketknife. As strange as the title may be, the song is a barrage of sweet rocking riffs and catchy vocal buts. It almost reminds you of early Kyuss, but faster and catchier. Overall, “Fate is Your Muse” is a must-add to your collection. If you are fans of metal, hard rock, or just good music, this will fill that void for you.
